Preparing for the New Year…

I know, Christmas hasn’t even happened yet. But this morning I began my preparation for the New Year, by getting on my hands and knees and scrubbing my kitchen and bathroom floors with bleach until they sparkled. It’s part and parcel of my New Year’s Eve rituals, which include:

  • I always do at least one hour of introspection and analysis of the past year in my diary. Have to realize where you have been to know where you’re going.
  • I always make plans for New Years. I believe that how you spend New Years is a predictor on how you spend the rest of the year, so I try to make sure that I am enjoying myself, be it at a large loud nightclub or a quiet night with friends/loved one and champagne watching Dick Clarke at home.
  • I always try to get a bowl of soupe jomou from somewhere, be it a family member or restaurant. I grew up with that tradition and I try never to break it. Soupe jomou (pumpkin soup) is the Haitian version of black eyed peas on New Year’s Day. Never forget that New Year’s day is also the celebration of Haitian Independence (Jan. 1, 1804).

I keep wandering into the kitchen to look. The room looks so pristine with the clean floors, the blinds are open and the sunlight streams in. Now it’s time to tackle the living room and bedroom, infinitely harder tasks. But I am really looking forward to 2009. 2008 was a difficult year for me, but I believe that it was positioning me to receive blessings in the New Year. And I will be ready!

  1. I am so over Christmas too (even though it hasn’t happened lol).

I am looking forward to all the good things 2009 is going to bring because I see this upcoming year to make things happen.

  2. I agree! And my horoscope does too! LOL
